It’s Friday and after the week I’ve had… the only Friday Mixtape I can think of is just this song over and over and over. BRB I’ll be dancing in my kitchen in my weekend sweats. Lather rinse repeat.

As the house projects are slowly taking over our lives… things are also coming together. I’m thankful for a day off to to spend with these jokers painting and getting our House more like Home.

To help along your weekend projects, here’s a Friday Mix. May your day be productive and exciting!

PS. Family & Friends are playing Georgia Theatre tomorrow for all you Athenians looking for a good show this weekend…

Summer’s been good to me but there’s been a slight fall-ish breeze making its way through the streets of Athens that makes me long for a new season. I’ve also realized that with summer craziness I’ve neglected Friday Mixtapes! So, in honor of the end of summer days, here’s a lot of good tunes.

Friday Mixtape: Mean Girls Edition

Wednesday marked the 10th anniversary of Mean Girls and the day a silly little movie changed my life. I was already a big Tina Fey fan from watching her on Weekend Update on SNL, but this was something altogether different. I’d never seen anything like it before, and knew that I was immediately going to memorize every line and spend the rest of my days quoting it like some deranged parrot.

What I didn’t realize was that an army of people just like me would also become deranged parrots in their own right, and we all would go on talking incessantly about this movie, even 10 years later, as if it had just been released.

So to celebrate this momentous occasion, me and a few of my best girl friends made some Hump Day Treats and threw the best Mean Girls Party/Screening since Chris Iso’s Halloween shindig where Regina was spotted canoodling with Aaron Samuels, complete with Kalteen Bars, buttered and un-buttered muffins, cheese and crackers for 8 people, and a cake made of rainbows and smiles. We definitely just say around and soaked up each other’s awesomeness.

I also made a Friday Mixtape that’s pretty grool.

It’s a rainy cold Friday and I’m doing what I normally do on Fridays: enjoying my day off by meeting friends for breakfast, reading, catching up on my shows, and listening to good music. There is just something about a rainy, cold Friday: it’s so deeply comforting, like a warm pair of socks or a hug from a long lost friend.

Enjoy this mix today. I am greatly enjoying and being comforted by everyone’s sweet words after my post yesterday— it’s so nice to know you’re not alone, isn’t it?

Happy Friday. ++you can subscribe to all the Friday Mixtapes Here++

FRIDAY FRIDAY FRIDAY YALL. I am spending my morning mentally and physically recovering from seeing the premiere of Catching Fire last night. And emotionally (let’s be honest) because it was perfect. If you need me, I’ll be in a corner drinking coffee to stay away and thinking about how I wish I were cool and sassy like Katniss.

Enjoy your Friday and enjoy this week’s tunes! As always, you can subscribe to the Friday Mega Mixtape here.

Birthday Week is officially ending with a trip to the lake and some QT with my pals from college. To sum it all up, here’s the Birthday Mix of some of my favorite tunes* that I’ve been jammin’ to all week!

*Best served with a bonfire and seasonal libations whilst wearing a vest and boots.

I live in a very cool part of Athens called Normaltown, which I realize is a very silly and misleading name based on the information I just divulged about it being awesome. Normaltown is an amalgamation of all the best parts of the city: restaurants and architecture and music and history and industry and education and townies on bicycles. Sometimes when I’m sitting in my bed before 11PM in my sweatpants, listening to Katy Perry’s Roar on repeat… I think to myself "Wow I am so not cool enough to live here!" But then, before I know it… I am awoken by my neighbors’ free range chickens and I think… maybe it’s just a place where weird people live and so I fit right in.

"Normal"town, I love you.

Because I am no good at going to the gym and don’t want to become a sedentary potato… I’ve started walking to work. In the midst of this new routine, I’ve discovered more and more lovely things about this neighborhood (see pictures above for visual evidence.) And of course, my walks wouldn’t be complete without a good playlist.

I call this Friday Mixtape… The City Walkin’ And City Lovin’ Mix. Enjoy.

Yesterday I trekked back to the Sunshine State to spend a weekend in my old hometown; a 7.5 hour drive of playlists, Wait, Wait Don’t Tell Me episodes, and Sonic pit-stops for Diet Cherry Limeades with extra cherries.

This week’s mixtape is a little like a Cherry Limeade for the ears: a little sweet, a little tart, and the best decision you’ll make today. Favorite tracks include Helicopter by Branches and Pretend It’s Love by The Postelles. Helicopter builds an awesome windows-down-worthy crescendo worthy of its soaring moniker and Pretend It’s Love is the beachy duet I’ve been waiting to hear all summer.

Enjoy!

FRIDAY MIXTAPE TIME YO.

Short week, short mix. An impromptu trip to Lake Hartwell made for the perfect labor day and the listening of “Let’s Go Down” by Family of the Year a mandatory, consistent sound.

Enjoy and happy Friday.

HAPPY FRIDAY FOLKS.

This week has been a whirlwind of adventure and excitement that has included:

  • day trip to Atlanta with my favorite teens
  • learning how a 3D printer works
  • making Lara bars
  • replacing drip pans in a stovetop
  • eating King of Pops thrice.

All in all… a good week! I hope yours was great, too. If not, here are some tunes to jumpstart your weekend. Enjoy!

A few weekends ago I found this awesome chest of drawers at a yard sale. I didn’t realize these campaign chests were so popular, or that they were even called campaign chests, but folks who are way cooler than me convinced me they are très chic and I should most definitely buy it.

A little coral paint and some brass buffer and… voila! New living room.

While I was painting, I kept a list of good tunes I came across… and now, here they are for you, as part of the Friday Mixtape!

Enjoy and Happy Friday!

FRIDAY MIXTAAAAPE!

Sorry I’ve been absent from the mixtape scene as of late. Life comes atcha fast sometimes. But even when it’s fast, it’s nice to have a soundtrack.

Enjoy these tunes and have a rockin’ Friday!

I have always had an affinity for breakfast foods. I believe this stems from my Mom’s philosophy when eating in restaurants: she’d always look at the dessert menu first to see what she wanted, and choose her meal in accordance with the amount of room she wanted to save for the treat. And breakfast is basically a free pass to eat dessert for an entire meal and have it be legit. Cake for breakfast? Insanity. But here. Have a donut.

Late in high school, I remember coming across a quote that resonated so deeply with me that it became my own sort of food philosophy:

"Dinner parties are mere formalities; but you invite a man to breakfast because you want to see him.” - Thomas Babington Macaulay

In college, I interviewed musician, artist, and fellow UGAer Allison Weiss (who shares a similar love for breakfast and pancakes that I do (in fact, it was her album art of pancakes that originally drew me to wanting to interview her)) and one thing she said about breakfast (because of course I asked!) that has stuck with me was something similar to the Macaulay quote:

Breakfast is really special and delicious because you wake up and the first thing you want to do is see this other person and share a stack of pancakes with them. You really only do that with people you love.

(Allison also got me onto Tumblr many moons ago AND she’s the famous one whose tunes you hear on the Customize Your Theme page. Go Dawgs.)

BREAKFAST! I mean just think about it! It’s early, you’re not always in a pleasant mood or lookin’ great and you think Hey, yes. Let’s share something yummy even before these bags under my eyes go away. It’s the first thing you do in the morning and you’re inviting this other person to share in that moment with you. That’s intense!

So, anyways, today’s my last day at work. As a Going Away Celebration, the office organized a breakfast because they know how much I love it. Sure, it’s really just donuts and cinnamon rolls and coffee… but. It’s love. I feel very loved today and that makes me excited about the future. In the words of my girl Leslie Knope, Why Would Anybody Eat Anything Besides Breakfast Food?

I sure don’t know, Leslie. I sure don’t know.

With that…. ENJOY this Friday’s Mixtape. And go eat breakfast with someone you love. Go on. Go on.

PS. That super sweet Tolkien print up there was created by my dear friend Karla who is wicked talented and awesome and just basically the best.
