FRIDAY MIXTAAAAPE!
Sorry I’ve been absent from the mixtape scene as of late. Life comes atcha fast sometimes. But even when it’s fast, it’s nice to have a soundtrack.
Enjoy these tunes and have a rockin’ Friday!
I have always had an affinity for breakfast foods. I believe this stems from my Mom’s philosophy when eating in restaurants: she’d always look at the dessert menu first to see what she wanted, and choose her meal in accordance with the amount of room she wanted to save for the treat. And breakfast is basically a free pass to eat dessert for an entire meal and have it be legit. Cake for breakfast? Insanity. But here. Have a donut.
Late in high school, I remember coming across a quote that resonated so deeply with me that it became my own sort of food philosophy:
“Dinner parties are mere formalities; but you invite a man to breakfast because you want to see him.” - Thomas Babington Macaulay
In college, I interviewed musician, artist, and fellow UGAer Allison Weiss (who shares a similar love for breakfast and pancakes that I do (in fact, it was her album art of pancakes that originally drew me to wanting to interview her)) and one thing she said about breakfast (because of course I asked!) that has stuck with me was something similar to the Macaulay quote:
Breakfast is really special and delicious because you wake up and the first thing you want to do is see this other person and share a stack of pancakes with them. You really only do that with people you love.
(Allison also got me onto Tumblr many moons ago AND she’s the famous one whose tunes you hear on the Customize Your Theme page. Go Dawgs.)
BREAKFAST! I mean just think about it! It’s early, you’re not always in a pleasant mood or lookin’ great and you think Hey, yes. Let’s share something yummy even before these bags under my eyes go away. It’s the first thing you do in the morning and you’re inviting this other person to share in that moment with you. That’s intense!
So, anyways, today’s my last day at work. As a Going Away Celebration, the office organized a breakfast because they know how much I love it. Sure, it’s really just donuts and cinnamon rolls and coffee… but. It’s love. I feel very loved today and that makes me excited about the future. In the words of my girl Leslie Knope, Why Would Anybody Eat Anything Besides Breakfast Food?
I sure don’t know, Leslie. I sure don’t know.
With that…. ENJOY this Friday’s Mixtape. And go eat breakfast with someone you love. Go on. Go on.
As always, all the Friday Mixtape Tunes are here—-> ++ Friday Mix!
PS. That super sweet Tolkien print up there was created by my dear friend Karla who is wicked talented and awesome and just basically the best.
Another Friday!
I’m over here… workin’ workin’ workin’… one week left at this job. I hope your Friday involves something equally as exciting. (But, not as busy, let’s be honest.)
Enjoy these tunes as you work/play/drive in preparation for your weekend plans! As we were reminded sadly and horrifically earlier this week with Boston… there’s no telling what the day will hold. I pray you’ll all be safe, happy, and loved this weekend. The pictures above are some of my favorites from the trip my Dad and I took to Boston back in November. Truly an awesome place.
As always, all the Friday Mixtape Tunes are here—-> ++ Friday Mix! Huzzah!
And this Friday’s Mix is below! Have a great weekend!
Hello? Hello? Is this thing on?
I have been MIA from the blogscene lately for several reasons. Firstly… because I had too many secrets brewing and knew I would spill the beans before it was time and secondly… laziness? It’s always in there somewhere.
Secrets you say? Yes. I quit my job last Friday. More on that later.
Other things include: Liked a boy. Planted some flowers. Baked some pies. Typical things.
The boy is gone, the flowers are sort of alive and the pies were good, so all in all we can call it a somewhat successful two weeks. Somewhat.
In the summer of 2008 I studied abroad in France and went to the Cannes Film Festival with UGA. I had never done anything like that: Europe, or attempt to speak French. It was one of those experiences that gets tucked away in your soul and folded into your memory in a shiny gold box. I learned a lot about myself whilst lounging on the rock piers of the Riviera, and anytime I see or hear a reference to that Festival or to Southern France, I get a little nostalgic for the time in my life when I believed so much to be possible about life.
I saw the new poster for this summer’s Festival last Friday… on the morning that I quit my job. Not only do I love this photo of Paul Newman and his wife Joanne Woodward, but I love the story behind it. It was taken during production of their 1963 film A New Kind of Love and was remastered for the poster. (Side note: if any of you out there know someone who’s going to the Festival this summer… I would love to get a poster…)
Staring at this image gave me all kinds of hope… the kind of hope that was fostered in the French sunshine many summers ago as I was nearing the end of my collegiate career and unsure of what I was going to do in the future. The kind of hope I needed to walk in there and quit. The kind of hope that endless crepes and bottles of cheap French wine can bring.
A New Kind of Love.
My life looks very different right now than what my 21-year-old self would have thought… but I think that’s OK. I’m learning how to believe it’s OK.
More details on the job front as I have some, but can’t really share at the moment. Soon! Until then… enjoy these tunes. Some killer tracks by Elle King and Chic Gamine, to name a few ballers. But the whole thing is ballin’.
Happiest of Fridays to you.
++All the Fridayiest Tunes here!
Seriously though… any UGA kids out there going to the festival and wanna bring me back a poster :) ?
Woof.
Normally I’d be SO EXCITED THAT IT’S FRIDAYYYY but I am feeling very under-the-weather so I my enthusiasm is limited. Plus, I have a very big weekend ahead of me (bachelorette party! out-of-state friends in town! wedding! packing for a week at the beach! leaving for the beach!)
All that said, if I can get through today, I think I can run on happy endorphins to make it through the weekend. Only time will tell.
If the endorphins fail… there’s always music! Oh, and lots of meds. Here’s to surviving Friday and making it through the weekend AND PLEASE OH PLEASE DON’T LET THIS BE THE FLU RIGHT BEFORE THE BEACH…
It’s March. It’s Madness! I can’t believe it.
Here’s another Friday Mixtape to get us through our shared unbelief that it is indeed the 3rd month of 2013.
Also… there are two songs on here by The Crane Wives (I’ve put another one of their songs on a previous mix… if you’re paying attention.) But. They are MY JAM right now. MAH JAAAAM. So. Look into that…

Friday Mixtape Friday Mixtape Friday Friday Friday!
In honor of yesterday’s holla-day, I starting compiling all of my favorite love songs for this week’s mix. I dug deep into the archives of my mind for this one, and while the mix is long, it’s also rockin’ and full-o-love.
This mix could also consequently double as my karaoke playlist, but I can’t seem to harness my second-hand embarrassment long enough to actually ever be OK with doing karaoke. But. It’s out there just in case my judgment lapses and I find myself locked inside Shokitini or Walkers with a microphone.
This week’s mix includes tracks from Fyfe Dangerfield, Pixies, Hanson, Whitney Houston, Fun., The Avett Brothers, Fruit Bats, The Rumble Strips, Jaymay, Queen, The Temptations, Ray LaMontagne, Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, Rosie Thomas and Sufjan, City and Colour, 98 Degrees, The Kooks, Ronettes, Jessica Andrews, Natalie Cole, Tanya Tucker, Ingrid Michaelson, Death Cab for Cutie, Dashboard Confessional, Jackson Browne, Mariah Carey, A Fine Frenzy, Noah and the Whale.
It’s also a scary peek inside my brain. So. Be forewarned. You can also subscribe to the Mega Friday Mix if you want or need to listen to hours and hours of good music at random.
The thing about having something you’re supposed to do every week (grocery shopping, laundry, exercising) is that sometimes, you just don’t do it. (I think that’s why they call that “supposed to do.”) The Friday Mixtape is a little less dire than those other 3 (I see you, piles and piles of laundry I have been stepping over for days on end. I see you. I see you.) but sometimes, more important things call your name. Like going to get one of your best friends all married-up and stuff.
A & D have a particularly lovely story, having met as a bridesmaid and groomsman at another of our friends’ wedding a year and a half ago. SO CUTE am I right?
This group of friends that gathered this weekend to celebrate is a particular kind of wonderful: we met at camp as strange little children and somehow, despite time and changing and not living in the same cities or going to the same schools… we grew up and we did it together. There is a rare quality amongst us that only comes from having seen how far we’ve all come: from our summers of braided hair and sunburned skin in the North Carolina mountains to being grown-ups with college degrees and jobs and houses and now, husbands.
So even though it’s late… it was for a good reason. Here’s the mix!
I’ve kind of been avoiding the internet today because I didn’t get a chance to watch the series finale of 30 Rock yet (I know I know I know I KNOW) and didn’t want to risk any spoilers! But, I couldn’t keep you from the Friday Mix. So, here we are. I HOPE IT WAS WORTH IT.
Listen and enjoy and subscribe to the Mega Friday Mix if you want to keep up with it all.
ENJOY and have a great Friday!
Fridrizzle Mixtape, ya’ll. And to think, this kicks off a 3-day weekend. PRAISE BE.
After a week that started off like a warm, monsoony spring season ended up like a blistery, biting winter… the fact that it’s Friday couldn’t been more welcome in my eyes.
So enjoy today’s Friday Mix and +subscribe to the mega mix if you feel compelled to listen to 16 hours of musical bliss from all of the mixes thus far.
Friday Mixtape! The first one of 2013 whoop whoop!
Just about every Friday, I make a playlist of music I’ve been listening to and enjoying during the week. I work on my computer most of the day so the tunes are always flowing. It’s usually a pretty eclectic mix of songs, but it’s fun when I can see a theme or trend in the tunes that corresponds to how my week has gone and what I’ve been up to. That part is really mostly for me, but you can enjoy it just the same :)
This week you’ll notice a similar sound to the songs… a little laid back with lots of folk-inspired banjo and clap-beats. No better way to ring in the New Year. My two favorite songs this week are Counting Sheep by The Crane Wives and Either Way by Beta Radio.
And speaking of New Year… if the first song— a version of Auld Lang Syne— doesn’t get you going and excited about 2013… I don’t know what to tell you.
As always, these songs will be added to the big Fridays Mix where all the songs from all the Friday Mixtapes are compiled. Subscribe if you’d like to and enjoy some really good music for hours and hours and hours. And then more hours.
Friday Mixtape: It’s the End of the World, But Also The Holidays! Edition
And since it’s been a few weeks since I’ve made one (sorry ‘bout that. Life calls sometimes. Gotta answer.) this one is extra rockin’. Perfect music for cruising down 75 on your way home for the holidays or for jammin’ out since it’s not the last day on earth. Win win.
This mix has songs from LP, Vacationer, First Aid Kit, Wilco, Hospitality, The Lumineers, Titus Andronicus, Cory Chisel and the Wandering Sons, Justin Townes Earle, Bing Crosby, hoots & hellmouth, Shovels & Rope, Soft Swells, Zac Brown Band, Dirty Projectors, John Williams and Dad Rocks! Quite the mix this time around, I’d say.
The LP song in particular needs to be played real loudly. OK? Promise? Good.
You can also subscribe to my FRIDAYS mix and listen to all the tunes from all the Friday Mixtapes so far… if you’re feeling particularly tune-less on this crisp Friday afternoon.
Enjoy, Happy Holidays, and as always… Go Dawgs.
WE BUILT THIS CITY ON ROCK AND ROLLLLLLLLL
It’s Friday, and I am very excited. 1. Because it’s Friday and 2. The Dawgs play for the SEC Championship tomorrow. Am I wearing Red and Black right now? You betcha. Do I have unrealistic optimism about tomorrow’s victory? Of course. All good Georgia fans do.
All good Georgia fans are also aware of the uncanny similarities of this season’s set-up with the championship season of 1980: Alabama was #2 in the SEC and UGA beat Notre Dame for the Big Win. I love stuff like that. Statistic nerds around the world rejoice. It’s enough to give me chills.
In honor of the 1980 season (and with the hopes that 2012 will feel like deja vu)… this week’s Mixtape hosts some of my favorite tunes from the 80s.
Tomorrow I better see all my Dawgs sporting acid washed jeans and rocking the casbah. Maybe if we can make it feel like 1980 we won’t stop believing and we’ll win. BRING ME A HIGHER LOVE, Dawgs. Don’t go losing. Don’t do me like that.
This week’s mix is fun and all over the place. Truly a MIX. Kind of a reflection of my brain and life lately. Enjoy!
You can also subscribe to my FRIDAYS mix and listen to all the tunes from all the Friday Mixtapes. If you needed like, hours and hours of music to listen to, that’s a nice place to start.
Friday Mixtape time. These are the tunes that have been flowing in my brain this week. Enjoyyyyyyy. Especially that Kyle Andrews. Mmm.
